The Value of a Small Gesture
So encourage each other and build each other up (1 Thessalonians 5:11 NLT).
It had been a bad week and then to top it all I wasn’t feeling well. I sat in my living room and planned my upcoming pity party. Limp balloons in dire need of helium, a damaged piñata that was spilling candy from its innards, and droopy streamers that looked like a hefty elephant had sat on them. All the items needed for a successful pity party.
And then a friend arrived with a beautiful bouquet of roses in hand. After the initial rush of tears, my spirits lifted. Someone cared and had taken the time to show it.
This reminded me of how a small gesture can make a huge impact. A bunch of flowers on a co-worker’s desk who is depressed and stressed, a cup of coffee for the cashier at the grocery store who, at 7:00 am is struggling to get going, a smile for the exhausted-looking woman in the elevator.
Don’t dismiss the value of a small gesture. It could give someone the strength and encouragement to face another day. And it might be just the medicine to improve your day. Encouragement is contagious – your heart will be warmed by the smile you receive in return. It is more blessed to give than receive.
“And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Acts 20:35 NKJV)
