Hey Mighty Warrior!
When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon He said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior”
(Judges 6:12)
This is how an angel, sent by God, addressed Gideon which was somewhat ironic as Gideon was, at the time, skulking in a winepress, threshing wheat, hoping the Midianites, who were currently marauding through the land of Israel, would not notice him. Talk about an aspirational title.
God could have called, “Hey Quivering Chicken!” or “”Fraidy Ferret!” But instead He called Gideon by the name he was to become, because God saw in Gideon the potential to become a mighty warrior if Gideon followed and trusted God.
Gideon may have stumbled along the way, but he did great great things for God and his story lives on thousands of years later in the Book of Judges.
What would God call you? You may think you are too battle scarred, too sinful, too inexperienced in your Christian walk to be able to be used by God. If that is what you think, please read God’s roll call of faithful heroes in Hebrews chapter 11. All of them had feet of clay, all stumbled and fell, and all were used mightily by God.
There is nothing you have ever done that can preclude God using you – mightily! When I get down on myself and wonder how God can use me, I remember that He once used a donkey!
So, step out in faith, go where He leads you and see what name He gives you. I guarantee it won’t be “Quivering Chicken.”
Thus, Midian was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its head again. During Gideon’s lifetime, the land had peace forty years. (Judges 8:28 NIV)
