Spreading the Aroma

Spreading the Aroma

But thanks be to God, who always puts us on display
And through us spreads the aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place
(2 Corinthians 2:14 HSB)

How do you spread the Gospel? Do you spread rose petals or manure? Are you an odorous skunk or a fragrant flower? Are you judgmental and arrogant? Do you stride in, intent on showing your holiness and superior knowledge? Do you “throw up” the Gospel on people and then gallop off, patting yourself on the back for a job well done?

Stop and think about it. You were once in the position of the person you are witnessing to, a sinner in desperate need of a Savior. Follow the example of the Great Shepherd. He always approached the lost and hurting gently, with deep compassion.

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd (Matthew 9:36 NLT).

Also, don’t take the weight on your shoulders of believing you need to close the deal and have them accept Christ immediately. It is the Holy Spirit who does the work, not you. It is the voice of the His Spirit combined with the His Word that releases His power to save.

You could be the instrument He uses to sow a seed, or He may use you to water one already planted. Or you may be the one who has the incredible privilege of leading someone to accept Him. Whatever your role you may play, He has chosen you to do it. We are privileged to be His representatives. We just need to follow His gentle leading.

I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase (1 Corinthians 3: 6-7).
