God Has a Sense of Humor

God Has a Sense of Humor

Then I said, “Put a clean turban on his head.”
So, they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him,
while the angel of the Lord stood by.
(Zechariah 3:5 NIV)

God has a sense of humor. I know this for a fact. He made me. And ducks and donkeys and pelicans. Duck-billed platypuses too. I defy you to watch a duck waddling to a pond and not smile.

But I also have personal proof of His humor. I had surgery which resulted in my head being bandaged in a big, white turban. The kindest comment I got from my loving family was that I looked like a character from the children’s show, the Teletubbies! Friends and co-workers amused themselves by sending me character hats—one in the shape of the shark head from the Jaws poster, with teeth framing my face, a bonnet with fruit and flowers, a squid. They also offered a lot of annoying suggestions.

After a night of pain and very little sleep, I woke up extremely irritated and not in the mood for talking to anyone. When I looked in the mirror, my mood worsened. The turban was now loose with bandages dangling everywhere. I looked like a swollen mummy coming unwrapped. A large area of the bandages was also covered in blood stains. It was a delightful picture. I decided to avoid checking messages and emails, choosing instead to spend time with Someone who I knew would understand my pain and misery.

That was when I discovered God really does have a sense of humor. I opened my Bible and looked down at this verse in Zechariah, where the Lord is telling Joshua the High Priest to go put on a clean turban. I didn’t land on a passage about healing or the Lord being my strength through long, painful nights. Instead, I landed on a passage talking about a turban. You can decide whether this was just a coincidence or the Holy Spirit having some fun. I think He was encouraging me to laugh with him.

And, of course, He did once use a donkey to deliver His prophetic message.
