The Fifth Sparrow
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?
Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.
(Luke 12:6 NIV)
The going rate to purchase sparrows in Jesus’ day was one penny for two sparrows and two pennies for five sparrows. The fifth sparrow was thrown in free.
Do you sometimes feel like a fifth sparrow? Unimportant, just thrown into the world as an afterthought, perhaps not really needed and worth little?
This verse shows us God remembers even one little sparrow. He made that sparrow, He loves that sparrow, and He takes care of that one little sparrow the world might think is worth nothing. The fifth sparrow is just as important and valuable as the other four in God’s eyes.
Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside of your Father’s care (Matthew 10:29 NIV).
You are not a forgotten fifth sparrow. You are a one-of-a-kind, fearfully and wonderfully made, unique in every way sparrow.
For You formed my inward parts; you covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made… My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book, they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them (Psalm 139:13-16 NKJV).
You are a masterpiece. The dictionary definition of a masterpiece is “a person’s greatest piece of work, a consummate example of skill or excellence of any kind.”
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do good things he planned for us long ago (Ephesians 2:10 NLT).
Don’t ever think you are a mistake or an accident.
Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you (Jeremiah 1:5 NKJV).
You are created in God’s own image.
So, God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them (Genesis 1:27 NKJV)
And God has marvelous plans for your life.
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV).
So, stand proud little sparrow. Your Father in heaven adores you and is watching carefully over you as you wing your way through life.
